An Invitation from Clive
Welcome to the website of the International Trauma Recovery Summit, taking place in Belfast on the 27th and 28th of June 2018.
Belfast has a tragic legacy of trauma from the ‘Troubles’. Trauma goes down the generations and affects the whole family. As a result, we have the highest suicide rate in the UK and the worst mental health statistics. Trauma also affects a great many other people and in many different ways, leading to illness, addictions, depression, rage and aggression. However trauma is an injury, not an illness and can be successfully healed.
This Summit Conference is for professionals who deal with trauma and its consequences and anyone else with a particular interest in learning about trauma. It draws together experts from across the world and will bring you up to date with the latest statistics, thinking and healing techniques.
This initiative is intended to ‘grab the headlines’ and create a ‘buzz’ surrounding trauma, its effects and its healing, but it is important to acknowledge, thank and pay tribute to the many thousands of compassionate, ‘unsung heroes’ in Northern Ireland who have been, and are, working tirelessly and selflessly towards these same objectives over many years. Comprising individuals, groups and organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors, including universities and other institutions, they are dedicated to supporting and helping others less fortunate than themselves. Our initiative must not ‘steal their limelight’ or take away from what is already happening so strongly ‘on the ground’, but must complement, encourage and enhance it.
We want to ‘spread the word’ to as many people as possible, so attendance fees are modest. We expect more than 600 delegates for the ‘summit’.
